Banaras Silk Saree

The Banaras silk saree, originating from the ancient city of Varanasi, also known as Benares, represents the epitome of Indian handloom craftsmanship. Predominantly worn by Indian women during significant occasions like weddings, the Banarasi weaves are expected to be paired with exquisite jewellery. Woven from finely textured silk, these sarees display intricate designs, contributing to their substantial weight.

Meticulous craftsmanship behind each weave

The creation of a Banaras silk saree can vary from 15 days to a month, and sometimes up to six months, depending on the complexity of its designs. Celebrated for their richness, these weaves are meticulously crafted with gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk, and intricate embroidery.

Avatars of the Banarasi weave

The Banaras silk saree dons various avatars, which are predominantly classified into pure silk (Katan), Organza (Kora) with Zari and silk, Georgette, and Shattir. These weaves are further classified based on the design process, encompassing Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue, and Butidar.

Maintaining a Banaras saree

To preserve the integrity of these sarees, it is advisable to store them in a cool, dry place, shielded from sunlight, dust, and moisture. Every 4-6 months, unfolding and refolding a Banaras silk saree is recommended to maintain its quality.

Styling a Banaras silk saree

Pairing a Banaras silk saree with a blouse of matching or contrasting colour, along with traditional jewellery like jhumkas or bangles, creates a perfect ensemble for weddings, festivals, and formal occasions.
