On the banks of Narmada
The roots of Maheshwari silk sarees crawl back to the 18th century, an age when the local weavers of Maheshwar incorporated traditional hand looming techniques to weave silk and cotton together. Soon, the magnificence of the weaves was recognised by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of the Holkar state, whose encouragement widely promoted the sarees amongst the royal and aristocratic communities. Over time, these drapes traversed the barriers of class and enjoyed immense popularity from all.
Traditional craftsmanship and hand looming techniques
The craftsmen of Maheshwar have ever since maintained pinnacle standards in weaving these Maheshwari cotton silk sarees. Inheriting the craft from their ancestors, the weaving community members have passionately retained the cultural and historical significance of these sarees.
