Hindu Marriage Saree
Sarees Worn in Hindu Weddings: Region, Ritual, and Fabric
Sarees That Hold Ritual Value
In Hindu weddings, the saree is not just a garment. It carries meaning tied to custom, region, and ritual. The style, colour, and weave change across states, but the presence of the saree itself remains constant.

In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, Kanchipuram silk sarees are worn during the wedding ceremony. These sarees are built with weight and structure. They use pure mulberry silk and real zari. Red, gold, and deep green are commonly worn. The border is wide, the pallu is detailed, and the pleats are pinned to stay in place through long rituals.
In Maharashtra, Paithani sarees take the lead. Brides usually wear bright shades like magenta, peacock green, or mustard. The borders feature parrots, lotuses, or peacocks. These sarees are lighter than Kanchipurams but woven with the same care.
In North India, Banarasi silk is most common. The sarees are usually red or pink, with heavy zari work across the body and pallu. In some families, a mother’s wedding saree is passed down to the daughter.
Bengali weddings often feature red and white sarees — plain or woven in silk or tussar. The drape style is open and less structured, often without too many pleats.
After the Ceremony
The Hindu marriage saree is usually kept and worn again. Some bring it out on anniversaries, others during major pujas or family functions. It may be folded away carefully, not touched often, but not forgotten.
At Mavuris, sarees for weddings are selected based on region, fabric origin, and weaving style — not trend. The saree isn’t just worn once. It stays.
