Maharashtra Saree: A State Treasure
Sarees Worn Across the State
In Maharashtra, sarees are part of daily wear, festive rituals, and wedding customs. The styles vary across regions, but the identity of a Maharashtra saree is usually linked to fabric, drape, and colour.

The most widely known is the Paithani saree, woven in Yeola and nearby towns. It’s made from fine silk, with real zari borders and pallus filled with peacock, lotus, and parrot motifs. These sarees are worn during weddings, thread ceremonies, and Diwali. They’re passed down, folded in tissue, and worn again across generations.
Another type is the Nauvari saree, also called Kashta. It’s nine yards long and worn in a drape style that resembles a dhoti. It allows free movement and was once everyday wear for women who worked in fields or homes. Today, it’s mostly worn during Ganesh festival, Haldi functions, or Lavani performances.
Cotton sarees from Solapur and khana blouses from the same region are common in rural and semi-urban parts. These are practical, built for repeated wear, and suited to long days. The borders are firm, the body is plain or checked, and the pallu is simple.
What Stays the Same
Across styles, the one thing that stays steady is the use of colour. Greens, yellows, reds, purples, and oranges show up often. Contrast borders are the norm, not the exception. The sarees are meant to be worn, not just kept.
A Maharashtra saree is less about design trends and more about place and use. It’s not a costume. It’s part of the routine — worn on good days, busy days, and days that need remembering.
