Patan Na Patola - The Saree That Takes Two Years to Make and a Lifetime to Forget

Most things described as "rare" are used loosely. Not this. Patan na Patola is genuinely, verifiably, almost uncomfortably rare, a double ikat silk weaving tradition that has been practised in the city of Patan, Gujarat, for over nine hundred years, and today survives in the hands of exactly one family. One. The Salvi family of Patan are the last remaining weaver of authentic Patan na Patola, and each saree they produce takes anywhere from six months to two years to complete.

Let that sit for a second.

Two years. For one saree.
