The birth of an art form

With a strong-forged connection with the history of Lucknow, the Chikankari art form has touched every household in the region with its magical charm. Derived from the Persian word ‘chikan”, the craft rose to prominence during the 16th century, a time when Mughals reigned supreme. It was said that Emperor Jahangir’s wife, Noor Jahan, played a major role in popularising Chikakari. Ever since, the weaving community of the city has passionately inherited the skill of giving life to drapes, keeping the craft authentic for ages.

Beyond sarees

The Chikankari work, an art of weaving fabrics with floral patterns and culturally significant motifs, transcends the borders of sarees and is often seen on regular dresses and chudidars as well. This versatility makes it one of the most revered sartorial crafts amongst the weaving communities.
